Experienced graphics designer (over 30 years) who loves variety mixed with lots of tedious details - actively seeking steady part-time or project work as graphics support for small local businesses. I am passionate about usability, simplification, and functional design. My favorite projects are "how to" instruction sheets. While my portfolio includes everything from medical illustration to stage backdrops & costumes, I can also get excited about doing a good, simple newsletter layout or catalog.

TAYLOR CORPORATION, (Anderson Party Supply) (3 seasons) Part-time Production Artist, Graphics Department Creating graphics for glassware, pencils, frames, pennants, and other souvenir items for silkscreen or print was my role. The focus was on SIMPLICITY and CLARITY and the ability to make 10-pounds of information look good in a 5-pound space. Accuracy and a familiarity with fonts was necessary. Quick turnarounds were the norm. |
UNISYS CORPORATION, (Roseville, MN) 1968–2006 The Department projects involved web, print, video, multimedia, signage, displays and more. The bulk of my work consisted of business presentation graphics (PowerPoint), marketing proposal art, layout & design, posters, banners, and the later 10 years doing for technical illustrations for Product Information. Emulating the illustration styles for everything from cartoons to technical illustrations and following branding guidelines & templates in a team of 5-10 designers was essential. My strengths were in organizing projects and creating templates, and processes to simplify them. One assignment included style-checking 100+ html web pages against unfamiliar style sheet for a user interface design. The style sheets were becoming unwieldy because many different programmers were allowed to add new styles at will, often duplicating styles and making load time unnecessarily long. I initiated a VISUAL SAMPLE guide of all the styles and revamped the CSS using abbreviated styles eliminating unneeded code and allowing the interface to load and run faster. Another project involved condensing a large technical manual down to a much smaller foldout. (See MERIT AWARD.) My career with Unisys evolved from drafting table, to Computer with a wide exposure to a variety of tools and graphics applications. A side benefit of supporting Product Information was that I learned a whole lot about MSWord Templates, several CMS applications, as well as several CAD & 3D applications (AutoCad, 3D Max, ProE). We also had a couple years where we produced video multimedia pieces which added Adobe Premiere, Sony Soundforge, and the basics of videography to my repertoire.
