Tom Sherren wrote the script.

We loaded SCMS II on my PC and did the captures with RoboDemo v5.

Added audio and exported them to .swf files

SOFTWARE: Camtasia v2, SoundForge v7
Both a Web version and a CD version were created using RoboDemo v5.
Requested by: Jon Barron on 2/14 (Tom Sherren is developer)
Platform: SCMS II 2.0 (for Odyssey; Dorado 380)

AUDIO: by Creative Media Services - Steve Mosley, Audio Engineer
Vocal Talent used; Wes Osborn, Pete ? and Linda (freelance & interns)
Recorded at 48Mhz, 16bit Mono .wav files. Barb H edited raw recording and adjusted audio in SoundForge v7 to 44mhz.
Note: to import this audio into RoboDemo v5, change the Recording settings to something higher than that or it comes in at 0/0/0.
CAPTURES: used RoboDemo v5.0
CAPTURE SETTINGS: 880 x 660 pixel frame size, monitor set to 1024 x 768 - 188x 50y
MOUSE: No Mouse Clicks or visual mouse clicks
MOVIE PREFERENCES: 4 sec avg per frame and adjusted to accomodate added audio
PLAYBAR: Steelbar - bottom left on section 1 only, bottom right for all others
EXPORTED: to .html and .swf for web and CD versions at 12 fps 880 x 660
HILIGHTS: XPNote - gold with 10pt Arial Bold, and Postit Yellow balloons with 8pt Arial
ENDING SLIDE: Used Text Animation = Sliced - 44pt Arial white on black

SCMS II application loaded on Capture Station temporarily: harry, brat_5236h2, this computer

Captured PowerPoints with monitor set to 1024 x 768 in screenshow using ALT+Print Screen keys and pasting into Photoshop. Then scaled the capture to 880x660 and saved as a 12 .jpg. Then in RoboDemo, did an INSERT AN IMAGE FILE to bring it in. Note, where captures were needed that I had to dummy in, I captured a similar screen, edited it in Photoshop and did the INSERT AN IMAGE FILE. You cannot edit the mouse position on these screens, so you need to have it in the position you want it on the edited image.

ABOUT ROBODEMO v5.0 VERSION

  • Found RoboDemo v5 has some limitations as to the length and number of frames per .exe file or .swf file. Approximately 200 framesets maximum with captions only - no audio. Approximately 150 framesets maximum with audio added. RoboDemo v5.0 does not work with WinXP.
  • Flash limitations (16,000 frames).
  • If using more than one bubble/caption per frameset, you sometimes run into timing problems. They don't always export in the correct order or one might follow another.
  • Found EXE exports don't allow for "same screen" viewing. SWF export has more options and variables include the fact that you can resize your viewing window to fit the screen you are viewing it on - eg. palm pilot.

TIPS FOR SETTING THE TIMING IN ROBODEMO 5.0:

  • We found we had to test the timings in .swf format to be able to trust them. The first time I exported to .exe, the results played fine on my PC, but the audio was clipped when they were played on someone else's PC. This is a bug.
  • Captions or hilight boxes also allow longer time setting on a frame and override the frame time setting.
  • You can remove the mouse altogether or even MOVE the mouse to a new location AFTER capturing a frame if it wasn't quite where you wanted it. NICE FEATURE! You can also remove the mouse clicks or keyboard clicks.
  • If you should have a frame that has audio longer than the default - or maximum allowed, and it doesn't have any captions or hilite objects, you can fool RoboDemo by putting a transparent caption with a "." (period) on it somewhere and put the extra time needed into the caption properties as that will override the timing on the frame. Make the period invisible by placing it on a black area. You can edit the timing same as text editing in the caption/hiliting settings. Not recommed but another possibility: you can fool RoboDemo is by putting the maximum time on the first frame. Then copying that frame so there are now two of the same frame. Remove the audio from the second copy and set the time for the frame to accommodate the needed extra seconds for the audio. If you have hilite boxes, you'll need to set the fade-in-fade-out differently.
AUDIO TIPS
  • RoboDemo automatically converts .wav to mpeg.
  • RoboDemo defaults are 16kbps(shortwave radio), Mono, 22050Hz. There's a "tiney" sound to it. While it sounds OK and does make for a smaller filesize, as you export and re-export the files several times over, bugs seem to appear and the sound does not remain consistent.
  • To change the output to a higher quality audio, right-click on a frame, select Audio + Advanced Settings. Select Convert and change the settings.
  • 32kbps at High (fast conversion) + MONO seems to sound best.
  • Higher quality sound conversion output will make the filesize larger.
  • Stereo setting gives out an echo in headphones. Don't know about other speakers.
  • Recommend recording audio in the soundbooth.
  • Recording STEREO is not necessary unless the audio might be repurposed.
  • In this project - I had some problems when playing with the output conversion for section 1. Once I had converted the audio to 32kbit, high - it wouldn't convert back to the 16kbps version (default) - it "zeroed out"?! And the mhz would not go back to 22 or 11. I noticed on the other sections that some were at 22mhz and some at 11mhz. Not sure why. The output quality didn't seem to matter as long as the bit sample rate was at 32kbps and Mono.
  • If you want to change the audio to a higher mhz, first set it higher than you want - then move down to the good settings.
FORMATTING RECOMMENDATIONS
  • I recommend using all the same size Arial Bold font (10 point minimum or larger) for all captions as it takes time to switch back and forth between sizes and styles. Also limit the number of caption styles to 1 or 2 maximum for uniformity. (also see next bullet)
  • You need to know in advance what the movie will be played on (eg. palm pilot vs laptop) to determine what resolution/size to record or export the movie at. When you play an .exe version – it’s SET to the size you recorded or export it to – eg. 800 x 600 – you can’t resize the window. When you play the Flash version – you can resize your screen to fit full screen or even a palm pilot. The resolution naturally degrades when you change the size of the window and some things would not be readable, but it’s still viewable. Thus, the LARGER the font size, the better in case it's viewed on a palm pilot.
  • We found our clients preferred to have captions IN ADDITION to the audio as some might not have sound capabilities on their PCs or may not want to listen to it or not have earphones so as not to bother others while listening. Is especially helpful when it's not clear what the mouse is doing (e.g. a right-click).
  • The playbars vary not only in their looks, but in their functionality. "Steel" with "progress" checked allows you to slide to a particular slide number. Some of the others don't have that option.
  • Inserting a "text animation" slide is a nice ending slide possibility. Use the same "effect" on all in a single show.
  • Any art or backgrounds included in the show/menu need to be the same screen size (800x600 in this case) as the rest of the show.
  • If using powerpoint slides, capture the frames in the slide-show mode at whatever resolution the screens were captures. (800x600).
  • If capturing powerpoint slides, you can remove the mouse pointer where not needed.
  • On the menu frame we recommend that you list the times of each section or module so busy users can decide easily whether they have enough time to watch it.
  • Don't forget to add a link to download a Flash Player on the Menu page if needed.
  • Copyright info can be placed in the "info" or "i" of the playbar if you don't want to waste web space with another capture.
